The Advertiser have reported on our "Have a Go Day", which took place on Sunday 1st May 2005
BEGINNER bowmen were on target for an afternoon of fun when they attended an archery open day on Sunday.
Have A Go was organised by Maidenhead Archers at the club’s training field, Braywick Sports Ground, in the afternoon. The club encouraged archers of all ages and abilities to try hitting straw targets from 15yds, using fibreglass bows.
About 20 people tried their hand with a bow and arrow, advised on aim, positioning and technique by six instructors from the club. Each participant paid £3 for the afternoon and, when they weren’t practising, admired the skill of club members hitting targets 100yds away.
Club chairman Clive Church said the annual event had been running for about 12 years and was very successful.
He said: “It’s held to get the public to come down and see if they’ve got an interest in archery, have some fun and hit the target safely.”
Club secretary Simon Gilbey said the event often recruited people to the Maidenhead Archers and several had already signed up for a club-run course.
He said “We aim to bring in more members each year and to attract more juniors so that the sport will go on a lot longer.”
The club practices on Wednesdays from 6.30pm and on Sundays from 1pm.
Mr Church said archery was a sport for all them family and invited anyone interested to contact the club.
He said: “We’re a laidback club, we want people to enjoy it. We take it seriously and go to competitions, but we don’t push them. It’s a friendly, easygoing club.”
